Elizabeth Frink, Compass Gallery and Botanic Gardens, Glasgow.
This exhibition is a disappointing atlalr. Widely reprinted statements from the press release - ‘her lirst exhibition in Scotland’, ‘one at Britain’s leading sculptors' - imply a tully-tledged one-person show. In reality it is an exhibition of screen prints and lithographs accompanied by related, but small and minor sculptures. The drawing is ol lndllterent quality.
Frink's work is reassuring because it makes no demands on the viewer. lt contorms to a general idea oi what sculpture should be, which makes it likeabie: a human ligure or an animal, hewn in stone or cast in bronze, and it’s sentimental. At the Compass are horses’ heads, men with baboons, and seated dogs. In the Botanic Garden is Desert Quartet 1-4 -lour 50ln-hlgh bronze heads. The ubiquitous Frink man has a strong iutting chin, thick neck, bald Caucasian head, broad lips and vacant eyes-tor which read
‘lmplnging mortallty’. The resulting angst is contained within the body with true British stoiclsm and a still upper lip. It is instntctlve to compare this approach with that ol sculptor Anthony Gorrnley, who considers how we inhabit our body in space and time. tieclts are stretched, arms are
* lengthened, oritices are emphasised. In working with what the body is, he avoids cliche.
It is dittlcult to see what has prevented Frink’s drive up the M6 beiore this, but surely a grant-funded exhibition should have come up with something stronger. (Fiona Byme Sutton)
