CHESS
j, u‘ ..
King’s Theatre, Glasgow. Until 25 Aug. The squares on the chess board are not the only things in black and white in the lavish Tim Rice/ABBA musical, tor despite the magnificent sets, bright costumes and cotourtul acting, this is a monochrome world at Good v Evil, East v West. The plot is surprisingly convoluted—Russia and America battle it out for world supremacy through the symbolic medium of the chess championship, K68 and CIA officials
conspire ruthlessly in classic Cold War fashion, the Russian detects, falls for the Yank's girl and is then pressurised to throw the game to save her C'zle’choslovak father. Can love conquer a
Well, no, itcan't actually, torunlike the musicals ot the 30s, where one’s biggest problem was getting Mickey Rooney to ask you to the dance, Chess
' aims for realism. Characters are
embittered and fraught with tension and hang-ups; the songs are about how their parents' divorces ruined their lives and there’s an awful Iotol loud, driving rock music. Call me an old luddy-duddy, but when it comes to musicals, lpreler Blanche Du Bois’ dictum: l don'twant realism, lwant magic.
Box-office takings would seem to show not everyone agrees and, in tairness, looked on more as a night-out than as a play, Chess is reasonably good value. The star, Rebecca Storme, gives her all, there are two quite decent songs (and everybody already knows them) and it you can close your eyes to the dodgy politics and cardboard characters, Chess can be enjoyed for what it is: all scenery, sound and fury, signifying nothing. (Andrea Baxter)
