Long before the first Europeans arrived Down Under, Australian Aboriginals were performing theatre: stories, dances and music with a heritage of thousands of years. Yet such has been the suppression of their culture that only recently was a play premiered with an all-Aboriginal production for the first time ever. That play was Muniong and the Western Australian Theatre Company have brought it to the Third Eye Centre as part of the Aboriginal arts season.
The play deals with the death in police custody of a young black man, a comic figure who doesn't fit into his community, but writer/director Richard Whalley emphasises the personal rather than political implications of this: ‘lt's not about swinging a big stick, it’s about opening doors and looking at what’s happening. People are afraid to talk about deaths in custody in Australia because they think it’s some big political thing, but we're pulling away from that. It's about human nature, the person who dies is an unknown, an innocent victim, and after his death he gets made into a political figure. I’m saying this is one person with aunts and uncles and relatives who has died who shouldn‘t have, each case must be seen as an individual, not a statistic.’
The play was number one at the box office when first performed in Melbourne and will shortly be made into a film. Walley is confident
