OREAM’SA DREAM
‘Edinburgh ravers resent people irom the West Coast coming across and trying to show them how clubs should be run. The feeling now is that the East Coast has enough good DJs, who don’t need Glaswegians telling them what to do.’
Thus DJ Bootsy, at Edinburgh club Dream, explains the recent rirt which saw an end to their eight-month collaboration with Glasgow’s Slam posse on Fridays at The Mission.
‘Dream began with a couple of experimental one-oils, then a series at nights at the Music Box underthe name or Phantasia. Aiterthat we got the idea to lorm a kind or creative liaison with Slam,’ he elucidates. ‘But because at the general attitude now, we amicably decided that it was time to go our separate ways’.
This division, designed to secure Dream’s reputation at the ioretront oi club culture, will necessarily bring about changes, most notably in the hot mix at upiront house lusion that the
club had become renowned tor.
‘Until this year the music was mostly a spin-oft oi that produced by the second summer of love, but it just wasn‘t receiving the same response on the dancelloor anymore, and so it had to alter. The whole techno, heavy house thing is over in Edinburgh. But we're not going to jump on the indie bandwagon.‘
Instead oi descending into the depths oi Mancunian madness like so many others, the Dream team have decided to return to the past to pillage inspiration for the tuture.
‘Aiter a bit at a crisis about our playlist we think we’ll go back to classic pre-house dance tracks. We are iinding ourselves more into the black US tradition at the moment. The intention is to start our nights oil in the same way as they are now, but progress through to a mellower mood.’
Such a decisive change in club policy, combined with an attitude which is anything but dilettante, is expected to effect a swing in the whole city scene.
‘Recently we’ve been attracting crowds of kids in big white trainers, which is line but not exclusively so,’ Bootsy explains. ‘We aim to play more retrospective music to bring back older pre-house clubbers; those who rememberthe hedonism at The Hooch. Since the demise ol Spanish Harlem they seem to spend their weekends hanging out in the City Cale — we’re going to change that. People seem to think that there is just nowhere to go, but there is just no reason why Glasgow should be the only place with good clubs. No reason at all.’ (Avril Mair)
