I The Choice 1 1pm—5am. £6. The most exclusive venue on Saturdays has all the new fashion collections by the likes of Hamnett. Basi and Gaultier on video for you to drool over. Make sure you‘re dressed up to the nines as well or you could be disappointed. Upfront dance.
I Detect at Fury Murrys. 11pm—3.30am. £3.1‘ve been a bit harsh about Defect in
the past. and while it ain‘t a personal favourite I can see the appeal. The students come in their droves for indie. indie/dance crossover. dance. Not trendy. but good clean fun.
I UFO at Tin Pan Alley. 11pm—5am. £5. Eternal — seriously upfront in the house stakes on one floor: and seriously groovy on the other. with 52 playing funk. rap. soul. etc. Very popular with young people with excessive trouser widths. Steven ' Sleepman. Mr 30 incher himselfmust be pleased.

I The Power at the Sub Club. llpm—3.30am. £2. Harri‘s still trying his hardest to promote reggae on the dancefloors. with some degree ofsuccess. After a slow start to the evening it really picks up around 1am. and this could be the club for the summer.

These sentiments, expressed recently by Primal Scream, are being echoed by the organisers of Edinburgh‘s latest dance event, who
intend to contront the one-dimensional nature of midweek city clubbing with a compulsive blend of the innovatory and the accepted.
Chris and John, lormerly associated with ventures like Acid and The Deep, have realised that only weekend ravers expect the unexpected, so Loaded aims to come up with a unique compromise. Instead of Chicago white label imports, the playlist will consist at an overlap oi indie and house music— but with many preceding their release dates, to
ensure originality.
Although a trendy alternative club might sound like a contradiction in terms, the boys feel that their past experience and knowledge, combined with the lack of such an independent club in Edinburgh, should result in an appealing mix. And from the sound of it, it certainly seems a much more attractive proposition than a night out with Bobby Gillespie!

SEX BEAT
Anyone spotting posters around Edinburgh recently, depicting a 15-stone transexual dressed head to toe in rubber and writhing in simulated ecstacy, might think that the club which they advertised was, well . . . a little unusual. And they would be right.
But Sex Beat, the latest venture by the boys from the Backroom, is not, as might be suspected, primarily tor leather letishists or those 01 dubious nocturnal inclinations.
Organisers Chris and Grant Mackie’s innovative advertising campaign is intended to attract anyone with an interest in uncompromising alternative
dance music, and their eclectic playlist of hard and heavy new beat, electro, on-u sounds, acid, hip hop, plus the odd 70s disco track should keep the intrigued around once the novelty of the hype wears on.
As well as eye-catching publicity, the added attraction of film and slide shows, special eitects and a stunning lighting display should make this club as essential as it is unusual. So will you come to the Sex Beat?
