FOUR MINUTE SMILER
This month the Srl Chimnoy AC's popular summer series at road races resume at the Meadows, Edinburgh. These races till a special place in the running calendar and cater for men and women at all levels of ability, trom ioggers and tunrunners who just like to run with others and perhaps compare times lrom week to week, to elite racers and club runners looking to improve their personal best against quality opposition.
There are many reasons for the continued and growing popularity of the races. They are run on the Sri Chimnoy Peace Mile - a last, llat, accurater measured one mile loop. This was set up by Sri Chimnoy AC and established by Edinburgh District Council. As well as a race venue, it is also a much-used training facility. (There are similar Peace Miles all over the world —the most recently being established in East Berlin. Sri Chimnoy, a man of peace, is also a keen athlete, and has inspired literally thousands of people to take up running). Other Peace Miles in Scotland are at Glasgow Green and Balbardle Park of Peace, Bathgate, with more to lollow.
With support from Edinburgh District Council, it has been possible to peg eritry lees, which have stayed at £1 tor quite a few years now- another reason people like the races
But mainly people just like the way the races are organised. The atmosphere is lrlendly, and everything is simple, straightforward and geared to the runner. As more than one participant has commented, it’s the

way races used to be — no commercialism, no hype, just the fun of doing it, for its own sake.
01 course, there are no massive prizes either. But there are medals each week for the tirst seven men and women, and the first three men and
women over fifty. Competition for these
can be tierce.
Most of the races are two-mllers, with the odd other race thrown in for variation —lrom 1 mile to 10km. The 1 mile races also cater for wheelchair athletes.
Entry is on the night, lrom 6.30pm at the Pavilion, Jawbone Walk, with the races starting at 7pm.
So whether you tancy a burn-up with
some of Scotland's top club runners, or
a gentle jog round the Meadows in good company, come along and find out why Runners are Smilers. (Alan Spence)
