JULIO GONZALEZ: SCULPTURES AND, DRAWINGS
Art Gallery and Museum, Kelvingrove. The Catalan SculptorJulio Gonzalez (1876—1942) was initially a metalsmith, and although he had always made sculptures, he only became known as a sculptor during the last ten years of his life. This is the first exhibition of his work in Europe for 35 years, and it is especially interesting in
its coverage of all aspects of his sculpture, showing the humanistic thread throughout, and how the abstract work relates to the figurative approach from which it was developed. He is best known for his later abstract work following his collaboration with Pablo Picasso in 1928, on a series of iron sculptures, and for his influence on David Smith who in 1956 named him the father of modern constructed metal sculpture. There seems to be much debate about how to contextualise Gonzalez, and this exhibition attempts to offer a new reading of the work. Almost all of the pieces here are the iron originals (as are the stone heads and plaster casts). It is clear that the use of iron, being an inexpensive metal, gave him a vast freedom; the spontaneity and joy come over in the work. These are not images of things but the essence of them. direct experiences of often mundane details of life. The unconfined. loose gesture of Dishevelled Woman (1935). the unlikely and surprising Head Called ‘The Tunnel‘ (c. 1932—33), the experience of being in Gothic Man (1937) which is devoid of recognisable figuration. all demonstrate this. His technique lends itself to such an approach. Whereas Picasso would create a pictorial narrative or make an image from putting objects together,
Gonzalez would create abstract forms 1 from within and weld them together as
a whole. For him, expression is also inherent in the making. This approach works surprisingly well and the open form leaves a lotto the imagination. (Paula Garcia Stone)
