ART & EXHIBITIONS LIST
Andy Weiner: Cautionary Tales, Stills, Edinburgh.
This is a bizzare, entertaining and challenging exhibition. Andy Weiner trained as a psychiatrist beiore going to the Royal College of Art; he still works as a psychiatrist in a hospital in London. His artwork can thus be seen as a means oi dealing with, and re-presenting to a wider audience, his hospital experiences. He sets up immaculately considered installations and then photographs them in what is now a discernible genre among Scottish artists, though Weiner's work is quite diiierent irom Ron O'Donnell's or Calum Colvin's in its content. His scenes are inhabited by mask-wearing people, a conceit which emphasises the masquerade oi much human behaviour, and also the nature oi hidden emotional pain. Series oi photos build up a narrative or expose aspects oi areas oi behaviour which
MASKS OF NORMALITY
many viewers will recognise with a sense oi horriiied iascination; humour and luscious colour add to the seductive qualities, while the emotional damage exposed makes you recoil. -
The masks in the Rake's Progress are all oi Weiner's own lace; he assumes male and iemale, child and adult roles; aspects at and conilicts within the same person lead to the iinal scene oi madness combined with conventionality. The wonderiully detailed Sex Scenes show the pleasurelessness oi obsessional or tetishistic behaviour; the Love Scenes use the vapid iaces oi Barbie, Ken and He-Man dolls to chart the devastating eitects oi what passes tor normal gendered behaviour. The Scenes trom the Lite oi the Virgin translate symbols seen in religious or line art iconography into contemporary domestic situations. (Hilary Robinson)
