ART & EXHIBITIONS LIST

Joseph McKenzie: Gorbals Children, Portiolio Gallery, Edinburgh. Much has been made oi the recent publication at the book oi the same title, and its dark images of snot-laden, deprived, poverty-ridden children playing in the gutters ol the Gorbals. The exhibition gives a different impression. These are original prints at the photos oi 1964-65, lighter in tone and Iargerthan the ones in the book. The ieeling is not oi the victims of poverty, but of the optimism oi the children, and the bonding oi a group within a strong local community, with a resultant resilience to circumstances beyond their control.

The photographs downstairs are oi

street scenes, children playing or posing ior McKenzie and his camera. Upstairs are stunning portraits of single children or small groups, representing not only the Individual children but also the multicultural nature oi Glasgow. Technically superb, moving and humorous, the reason that these images have been rarely seen must be because oi a wish to deny the day-to-day experience of these children. Even now, a venue has not been tound in Glasgow torthis show; a situation that must be remedied. In the meantime, get overto Edinburgh to see the show; the children in the photos should now be in their 30s . . . (Hilary Robinson)
