Seen at Blacktriars, Glasgow, 14 Apr. Every Fortnight. Can we introduce a rule that no comedian should use the phrase ‘I was watching tellythe other night . . .'? It‘s not that there isn't a lot oi tun to be made irom the small screen — it anything there’s too much - it’s more that TV jokes rarely stretch a comedian's powers at observation. The target is too soil, the laughs too easy. And most oi the comics on this evening’s bill iall back at some time or other on a iilm ortelevision gag. The tlrst titteen minutes oi Parrot’s act (I had to run ior a train aiterthat) dwell tar too long in the cinema. His skill lies in the protessionalism oi his delivery, a Connolly-esque patter with well-timed asides, and in his ability to hold the
audience's attention. But by limiting the scope oi his attack, he coniines himseli to a steady ilow ot chuckles, instead oi the hilarity oi which he is capable.
Opening the evening, John Gilllck, lull-time social worker and relative newcomer, runs through a set oi domestic observations, punchline jokes and a couple oi oil-beat imitations. His material is hit and miss — an opening quip aboutThe List is lost on a particularly restrained audience- but there are sparks oi sharp thinking in an act that ii honed down and broadened in scope will develop into a punchyrouhne.
I always think May McCreadie is unaware oi her own strengths. 0i all the comedians on tonight's bill, her approach - a casserole oi songs and witty social satire — is the most idiosyncratic. Here she has the misiortune to coniront the only audience in Scotland uninterested in iootball with a new routine about the world cup. That's just bad luck (although the closing song did seem weak), and with a mile more brashness, coniidence and grand gesture her strong material will come into its own.
But the real star oi the show tonight is compere Fred McAulay who, away irom the constraints at his normal routine, acts as a wondertully relaxed and welcoming host—spontaneous, trash and iunny. (Mark Fisher)
