The 6th Edinburgh Puppet Festival, the largest of its kind in Britain, is out to attract more audiences with additional venues in theatres on the outskirts of the city as well as several community centres. Nucleus oi the festival is of
course the Netherbow who offer a programme packed with something for all ages. Where's William, a journey through nursery land on a kidnap trail, and Puss 'n' Boots are aimed especially at younger children. Aladdin a Puppet Cabaret, a colourful production using extra large puppets, and Willie The Wicked Wolf, surely a cousin ot lovable Basil Brush, will appeal to children and adults.
Playing to a home crowd are Pictish Puppets from Wester Hailes, with The Haggis that lost its Glen, described as a ‘tast-moving comic epic’. From turther atield comes Yorkshire-man Phil Spellacy, performing two shows, the traditional Jack and the Beanstalk, opening with a display of puppet-making and Anansi the Spider, an Alrican legend about goodies and baddies in the animal world. Creating a world of legends is Mary Allan with Between Form and Fantasy, an exhibition of her work in various mediums including decorative carving and painting. Until 28 Apr. (Rene Taylor)
