As a post-script to the event, Joe Dillon. one of the organisers of our own Glenfiddich tournament, encountered a Polish team who. almost typically, were apparently quite extraordinary but lacked even the basic essentials of kit. The Speedway season is back, with two ol the three ‘local' teams, Glasgow Tigers and Berwick Bandits, not only showing olt new recruits, but also boasting new owners. Though there is nothing remarkable in owners eulogising theirteams’ polenlial, both Peter McBride at Glasgow and Terry Linden at Berwick have claims which are a little more than publicity-conscious. The Bandits look set to build on their cup success ol last season, with the purchase oi Steve Widt, though losing Sean Courtney to Glasgow will disappoint many who lreguent their out-oi-the-way Berrington Lough venue. «.;
in addition to Courtney, the Tigers, with Radio Clyde sponsorship, have signed 19-year-old Australian, Jason Lyons, said to be a ‘top-class prospecl.’ ironically, such are the riches available to Glasgowfs new owner, Peter McBride, he will not be able to iieid his strongest side tor the lirst month oi the National League programme. This ioiiows a ruling whereby the average number at points lor each rider is collated and teams are restricted to naming seven riders who score no more than lolly-two points in total. Not to be outdone, Edinburgh Monarchs have their own young Australian, Nigel Alderton, but the team have not been especially successiul in taking on new riders.
With the omens suggesting that the Tigers could win this season’s inter-city rivalry, they rev up with a European Special Olympiad, launching the preliminaries ior this year’s Special Olympics, scheduled iorthe week June 20-27. For speedway tans this is an opportunity to see a couple oi highly-rated guest American speedway riders, including Ronnie Correy, the lormer world numberthree. Taking place on Friday 30, it will be iollowed by a couple olTigers-Monarchs challenge matches beiore both embark on the National League campaign.

As a sport. kick boxing is best known to the average fight fan as ‘Thai boxing', consisting of boxing and martial arts kicking. However, the UK ster differs quite considerably from that employed in the Far East. The UK style draws from American kick boxing, which is more controlled than Thai boxing in that it does not allow for the more brutal use of unprotected elbows to the head, nor kicking at the legs. While this might ‘civilise’ a bout to some extent, it also means that there is a greater use of skill in the American version since it is relatively easy to kick someone’s legs until they can no longer stand.
