Interestingly, the more prestigious fight, between Dickson and Vaterro, is scheduled as a supporting bout to the Hood-Wallace contest, which is an offical British bantamweight eliminator. Wallace, from Liverpool, is a former Commonwealth champion in the flyweight division. and Hood is the current Scottish title-holder at the lighter weight. Dickson, the former British lightweight champion, is staging a bit of a comeback, having had a bit of a rough time in the last year. However, his work will be cut out against Vaterro, who has lost only two out of sixteen fights.

THE BAY THE wow TURNED DIEGO

The World Cup hovers above the nation like a dark brooding cloud on the horizon, as Iiicllvanney might put it, in his ilowery commentary box-speak. Well, ii we can’twin the thing we can at least talk exhaustiver about it. Prior to the summer deluge oi Iootball, the next topic on the agendas oi the bar-room coaches are the iriendly matches against Yugoslavia B and Argentina, on 27 and 28 March.

Choosing the squads tor these two test-matches seems to have brought

out the schoolteacher in Mr noxburgh. He has punished the Liverpool duo,

Gillespie and tilcol, ior playing truant from the class trip to Genoa, and shown his suspicion of the sick notes that McClair and Leighton proiiered by relegatlng them to the B squad and the bench respectively. ‘Teach has made It clear that he will brook no Indlscipiine In his meticulous preparations tor this summer's prize-giving In Italy. Besides his star pupils (Altiten, Cough, Johnston, McColst, McLeish and head-boy McStay) he will probably give one or two oi the scholarship lads a chance to shine In the ilrst eleven (Leveln and Collins). Meanwhile the B intematlonal at Fir Park will provide a great opportunity for those whose report cards have not been up to scratch to ‘try harder’.

Chanting his mantra ‘There are no easy games In lntemational iootbail’ Boxburgh will ultimately be planning renovations, ratherthan a dramatic rebuilding oi the team.

As tor the opposition, it is lilter that the walking soap opera - Maradona will be on the pitch having recovered irom an anirle injury. Apparently it’s only his hand which receives special attention from on high. The Rape" strilrer can put the wind up any deience in the world, never mind one as protligate as Scotland’s. The rest oi his side are no slouches either. Hence It may well prove to be a teaming experience-ior us, ratherthan them. (Boss Parsons)
