Renegades (15) (Jack Sholder, US, 1989) Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, Jami Gertz, Rob Knepper. 105 mins. Sutherland and Phillips first rode out together in the surprisingly effective ‘brat pack’ Western Young Guns. Now they return in a tough, buddy/cop thriller (actually filmed before Young Guns’ release) a la 48 Hours. Sutherland plays an undercover cop working with a gang of crooks to get at the cop behind them. It all goes horribly wrong for him when the gang screws up a diamond raid and, during the ensuing car chase, wind up in an art gallery. The mean but suave gangleader (Bill Smitrovich) takes a fancy to one of the exhibits, which happens to be the Sacred Lance of the Lakotas, and that’s where Phillips comes in. As a brave young Lakota whose brothertook a bellyful of lead, he is honour-bound to retrieve the Lance and waste his brother’s killer. He tracks down Sutherland (who by this time has been shot by Smitrovich) and the two team up to catch the villains.

Despite the unusual element of Red

Indian ritual (through which Sutherland is miraculously healed), and the fact that the love-interest (Ms Gertz) gets killed off, it's formula stuff fromhere on. White man attempts to speak with forked tongue but lnjun wise to him, the bent cop turns out to be Sutherland's boss, the bad guys take a dive against all odds and the odd couple overcome mutual mistrust to end up best of chums.

There are some neatly executed tough-guy routines, a rip-roaring car chase and strong performances from both stars. But the plot has more loopholes than a belt of wampum, the hoods are utterly two-dimensional, and you need pretty good suspension on your disbelief not to notice the gratuitousness of most of the action (check that motorbike in the burning-stables scene). As stencil-produced movies go, this one has a degree of originality and a reasonable level of tension, but its most remarkable feature is its firm adherence to genre. (Andrew Burnet)

Classic MGM all-singing all-dancing musical loosely based on the Rape ofthe Sabine Women. The dancing. choreographed by Michael Kidd. isits strongest point but its status as an all time great is probably marred most by the brash and primitive technicolour filming.
