DINOSAUR DEBUT

Dinosaurs Alive! City Art Centre, Market Street.

Dinosaurs Past and Present. Royal Museum of Scotland. Chambers Street. Pachycephalosaurus, stegosaurus, apatosaurus. No, it's not a Gaelic translation of the Mary Poppins' song, but the names of dinosaurs which, by the time you‘ve visited both exhibitions in the ‘Dinosaur Season’, should roll off the tongue. Visitors to ‘Dinosaurs Alive‘ will take a gigantic step back in time over 65 million years, give or take a mill —to enter the world ruled by lumbering reptiles. Seven adult and three baby dinosaurs make their

Scottish debut courtesy of the American company Dinamation. The dinosaurs are broughtto life (even their eyelids move) by an intricate system of compressed air, pistons, cylinders and hoses. Computers control the air flow to give them lifelike movements and sounds. The exhibits are full and half scale, old pachycephalosaurus is all fall and 15ft long, while a ‘baby’ apatosaurus waddles in at an x 10ft. Watch out for the snapping teeth and swishing tails!

Another exhibition making a debut— European no less— is ‘Dinosaurs, Past and Present'. Following a successful tour throughout America, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County are exhibiting around 150 paintings, sculptures and models of dinosaurs. Often depicted as lumbering, clumsy grey beasts this exhibition gives us a different view of dinosaurs- as loving mothers with their young, and young males sporting courting colours in the mating season. A bit like you’re average football supporter, really. Don't try to sneak in without paying there’s a 20ft-long allosaurus heavy on the door. (Rene Taylor)
