Howard Turner, who sings and plays guitar on his self~penned songs, Shake is inspired by the the Mersey boom and all the regional variations that came in its wake, and brings to life a sound that‘s well and truly expired — sounding a whole lot less contrived than whoever this week‘s revivalist darlings are in Melody Maker. The only group that can stand comparison is The La‘s, and who knows — maybe The Stone Roses were demoing songs that sounded like ‘In Passion' a couple of years ago. You might expect that for this group history ended when the snappy beat groups discovered acid and painted their albums with the insides of their skulls, but it wouldn't surprise me if Howard Turner could name every hit of the last year, so acute is his ear for a pop tune. I Fumlture: Food. Sex and Paranola (Arista) Since it‘s been three-and-a-half years since ‘Brilliant Mind‘, their only substantial hit, Furniture are undoubtedly feeling the pressure to come up with the goods that will rcawaken the public‘s interest. Unfortunately, this record won‘t do it. The emotional dramas of
Food, Sex, the Cook and
Some Videotapes take place over a restricting sound that‘s stuck in the
extent that one track plods along behind New Gold Dream, and in certain keys vocalist Tim Whelan‘s voice transmutes into Dave Gahan‘s unlovely drone. Expressively, one could argue, they‘ve strangled their songs at birth. ‘Subway to the Beach’ is quite lovely, but it‘s the track on which Whelan hands over the vocals to Sally Still, and that particular moment is over too soon. I Julee Cruise: Floating Into the Night (Warner Bros) This isn‘t a hoovering record; but what do you expect from a record co-written and co-produced by David Lynch, director of Eraserhead and Blue Velvet, and his musical collaborator on the latter film, Angelo Badalamenti? How about a swirling pea-souper of atmosphere for starters? Cruise herselfis faultless, maintaining a glacial calm, Lynch is clearly a ruthless editor when it comes to his own lyrics and Badalamenti. for his part, knows exactly how to have maximum effect with minimum instrumentation. It all swims seamlessly by to begin with, the listener half-leaning into the speaker to pick up Cruise‘s whispered pearls, until ‘I Remember', when the time changes, eerie chords start stalking the piano and everything goes
better aural example of Lynch‘s film technique; you‘re left knowing that a similar disturbance could come at any time. Hearit, but don't get too cosy. (Alastair Mabbott)
I The Beloved: Happiness (East/West) Sunnier than New Order, sexier than the Pet Shop Boys and druggier than Erasure, white dance music doesn‘t get much better than this.
Picture it, ifyou will. Friday night. A hot, sweaty, packed club and you‘re pissed. Happiness is the perfect soundtrack. From the opening blast of drum programming on ‘Hello‘ through the hi-NRG ‘Scarlet‘ to the soaring but gentle house single ‘A Sun Rising’, The Beloved sweep you up and leave you in a haze of uplifting melodies, drowning in a wash of smoky vocals and flailing to the relentless pulse of dance rhythms. Insert mind-altering substance of your choice and you have one hell of a night out.
The Beloved will probably sell to the same crowd that are ‘too busy‘ to tie-dye their own T-shirts. And to Radio One listeners, and to die-hard house fans. And to you, and to me. (Tracey Pepper)
I The Jungle Brothers: Done by the Forces 01 Nature (WEA) Damned ifl know what the manifesto ofThe Daisy Age is, but even ifit‘s a mutual admiration society for The
Soul. A Tribe Called Qwest and Queen Latifah, it‘s a sophisticated indication of where hip-hop is going, distinct from the shouted polemics of Public Enemy and NWA and the gangsterism and sexism of half-a-hundred Schooly-D‘s. Reservations about The .lungle Brothers— their city-as-jungle metaphor, their Green, gentle and tolerant stance — may turn out to hold water in the end, but at least they‘re widening the agenda and stretching the conception of what hip-hop can and should be. Also, Done by the Forces. . . sounds terrific. Despite the occasional lyrical lapse (like ‘Black Woman‘) the first great LP ofthe905. (Alastair Mabbott)
I Harry Connick Jr. When Harry Met Sally (CBS) With his marketably boyish good looks and the keyboard melodicism of a New Orleans Errol Garner, young white jazz pianist/vocalist Connick should soon be established in every yuppie CD collection with this selection ofeasily digestible standards from the soundtrack of Rob Reiner‘s thirtysomething romance. It would all smack of calculation were it not for the genuine affection that the lad puts in to the material. This Harry‘s struggle against his limited vocal range is quite an endearing one.
