Supplements, Polish Contemporary Drawing, Richard Demarco Gallery. The work at lilteen artists lrom Poland is teatured in this exhibition which is entirely made up oi drawings. The focus on drawing is not limited to an appreciation oi the work itsell, but exists to provide a beginning, a way at making marks which inlorm the wider areas and dilierent media which the artists use. These include the use at lilm, video and installation as well as the traditional areas of painting and sculpture. in addition, several oi the artists work collectively as part ol groups which possess a distinct identity for example Leszek Knaikewski‘s association with Kola Klipsa from Poznan and Wojciech Bruszewski's involvement with the Film Form's Workshop in Lodz. Group Luxus trom Wroclaw construct a critique of modern life which is ironic

and alienated yet remains humorous because at the attempt to create their own anarchic history.
Edward Dwurnik's drawings juxtapose symbols which lunction in different ways within Polish society and create an atmosphere of historical repression now in flux—tanks, decapitated workers, martial law, Solidarity tigures walking mourntully or questioningiy beside a crucilied Christ. In contrast to this reilection on historical space, the sculptural drawing oi Joanna Przybyla using burnt wood to make marks, the original tool - a tree branch — incorporated into the work forms a relief which is directly related to her monumental outside sculpture. Using natural materials, she shows an intuitive grasp 01 space and natural laws and her experimental approach is typical of the exhibition as a whole. (Lorna J. Waite)
Makonde Until 17 Feb. Contemporary "vood carvings from the people ofthe Makonde Plateau in Mozambique. the exhibition attempts to relate this modern form of African art to our own. ratherthan merely putting it on show as ‘ethnic‘ artefact.
