\ Kate Whitelord’s work is probably best-known to a wide Scottish audience
through the pieces she did a few years ago on Calton Hill — symbols cut into the turl evoking ancient grass-workings and images. Much at her work has had a similar resonance - archetypal or runlc images whose original meaning we sophisticates have somehow lost
, touch at, like a word on the tip of the
tongue that cannot be pushed into speech. That their signiilcance is weighty is clear to us through the intense and meticulous relationship the artist has had with her materials: the velvety, almost 30 surlace ol charcoal with the symbols apparently hovering just beneath the surlace; the selecting of a red and a green that are so precisely opposed and yet so tonally exact that they are painful to look at.
However, although Whitelord alludes to the ‘timeless' (in the sense of the lost-in-time), these are very much works of the late 20th Century. The dazzling effects at the two large dlptychs (the red and green described above, zinging off a pristine gesso surlace) reminded me of nothing so much as the shimmer at a VDU screen. But whereas the signs or the graffiti artists have been re-active and pro-active with the street politics that arose when the culture or the inner cities is hijacked by the three-minute culture, Whitelord's signs are instead re-active and pro-active with the sub-conscious ol the viewer. The same symbols that in the charcoal drawings prompt musings about earliest history provoke thoughts at the ‘ghost in the machine' in the paintings. Thus the viewer oi this show is left with questions that are less about what the work means, and more about how she perceives or constructs meaning. (Hilary Robinson)
