I City of Edinburgh v East End Mcadowbank Sports Centre. Londom Road. 8.30pm. It transpires that East End‘s defeat in the Cup by Boroughmuir was partly brought about by the difficulties which Erich Honecker. Egon Krenz and co. are currently experiencing across in the GDR. Tony McDaid. one of East End's more important players. was in East Germany on an exchange visit through Jordanhill College. but found himself marooned by the ’minor expressions of anxiety concerning the league performances of Lokomotiv Leipzig‘ and therefore unable to return home in time for the Cup match. Apparently. he wasn‘t even able to telephone Scotland to inform the team of his absence. and they went on to bow out ofthe competition. 74-67.

Especially after their heroic efforts in the second Round of the European Cup. against Yugoslavia's Split Yugoplastika. MIM should continue their domination of the Men‘s First Division by beating Boroughmuir, perhaps by as many as 25 points.
I Cumnock v Kitchens Plus Cumnock Academy. Ayr Road. Cumnock. 3pm. Cumnock are showing themselves to be the major contenders for the runners-up position behind MIM. However. to illustrate the gulf in the League. Cumnock kicked off the season with a 98-49 win over City of Edinburgh, only to lose 118-77a couple of days later to MIM.

Kitchens Plus are short of at least two key players, in Colin McNeil (injury) and Jim Mitchell.

3 hours later. This well-established event will involve 22 teams. each with eight runners. including at least two who are celebrating their centenaries this year. Teviotdale Harriers and Dundee
Hawkhill Harriers. Both Teviotdale— winners of the Scottish Cross-Country title a couple of weeks ago - and Dundee —with Peter McColgan in fine form — are very much fancied to relieve current holders. Aberdeen. of the Relay trophy. Also in contention are Springburn Harriers and Cambuslang.

I Race Days Tuesday. Thursday and Saturday, Shawfield Stadium, Rutherglen Road. Glasgow. There are 10 races on a Tuesday. 11 on a Thursday and 12 on a Saturday. Tuesday and Thursday meetings begin at 7.45pm; Saturday‘s starts at 7.30pm.

Thursday. 12 on a Saturday; starting at 7.30pm for Tuesday and Thursday. 7.15pm for Saturday. However. on Thursday 9. there is a daytime meeting. starting at 1.29pm. which will be broadcast by satellite to betting shops throughout the country. This will mean that the evening meeting for Thursday 9 will not be taking place. Two special meetings are worth visiting: on Tuesday 14. Club 86 (Hibs) are hoping to raise funds for the Hibernian‘s Youth Team. and on Thursday 16. there will be a testimonial for the Hearts international. Eamonn Bannon.

Optimistic backers of such local favourites as Desert Trixie and Alrmount Kyle will be able to watch their bets go west In broad daylight this Thursday (9 Nov) when Powderhali Greyhound Stadium plays host to Its first BAGS (Bookmakers' Afternoon Greyhound Service) matinee meeting.
Although BAGS meetings are essentially for the benefit of bookmakers throughout the country, with live commentaries and usually TV pictures beamed into every shop, staff at Powderhali are hoping that the novelty of afternoon racing will attract the public.
‘We’ve never had a matinee meeting before, so we’ve no idea what to expect,’ says assistant manager Norman Russell. ‘We find that newcomers to dog-racing won't come

along by regulars. We’re hoping people will come along out of curiosity, and we should get a good turnout for the first afternoon.‘ . Beginners should not be overawed by the intricacies of betting. The user-friendly race-card explains the great mass of figures that represents different combinations possible. The form is of limited use, and you are better following the race card’s brlef summaries or the Evening News tips. A better idea of which dogs to follow can be gained from following the stadium scoreboard and screens which show you every bet that is placed. Backing the favourites might be safest, although i know someone who backs

A further attraction to visitors is the family atmosphere that Powderhali encourages. Other sports could certainly learn a thing or two from the stadium's facilities. The image of dog racing as the domain of old men in flat caps screaming abuse at the runners is very outdated. Powderhali has a comfortable stand with a choice of bars and food outlets, and lorthe kids, their own soft drinks and sweets bar, and a bouncy castle to jump up and down on while daddy's dead certainty gets bumped out of the race at the first bend.
