_ CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS
Since the rugby National Leagues were established in season 1973—4, only lourteams have held on to Division One status from the start. One of them, Heriots FP, celebrates its centenary, and on Sunday 9, the oldest surviving president, Tom Baillie (195345) and the youngest playing member, Alan Hogarth, raised a commemorative tlag prior to a match against an SHU President's XV.
Made up entirely at internationallsts, the President's XV saw the club’s most capped player, Andy Irvine, team up with other great names lrom the past and present, such as Jim Henwick, Jim Calder and Roger Baird. With two further centenary matches still to take place, against Landsdowne on Saturday 16 and Edinburgh District on Monday 18, the hope is that the pre-season festivities will give the current Heriots side a keenerthan usual appetite lortheirtirst league match, which is against Edinburgh Academicals on Sunday 23. The return to litness oi prop, lain Milne, will add to the air at expectancy around Goldenacre this year as the club look to stage a more consistent challenge tor the Division One title, which they have won only once, in season 1978—79.
Last year, they approached the Christmas break in hostilities as joint leaders, but then let themselves down in the latter hall 01 the season, eventually linishing litth. With a tough start to their league programme (the match against Edinburgh Academicals is followed by a trip to Poynder Park against champions Kelso), and no home-and-away structure to the league, there is every reason to leel
that Heriots could tind themselves
either as title lavourites or relegation candidates by as early as November. The school 01 thought which argues tor a more extended league programme, consisting of home-and-away tixtures against every opponent, points not only to the risk ot the league championship being almost wrapped up so early in the season, but to the pressure players are having to cope with when they take an early lead in any particular game. Presumably, it a team is leading the likes ol Kelso 6-3 at hall-time, there will be every temptation to play out the match by kicking the ball into touch. For a team like Heriots, who have a tradition 01 playing running rugby, resorting to such a tactic must be anathema to them. To continue the good progress which Scottish rugby has enjoyed in recent years, let's hope that Heriots and every other team can rise above such practice. (Mike Wilson)
