EXPANSIONS AND THE FUTURE AT THE WAREHOUSE
Like or loathe it, most people now accept that house music will be around in some shape or iorm for years to come. The Americans are still producing the best house records, whetherthey're made in its established home at Chicago, or cities such as Detroit, New York, or Philadelphia, despite some outstanding British house records in recenttimes. America has the best artists, but each city produces its own unique sound, which only gets played in that city’s clubs and, because London doesn’t discriminate between the cities or the music, the house clubs there are the best in the world. Sadly, some olthe best house records never manage to come out of London, and other cities in Britain are usually way behind in styles and sounds.
Hopelullythlngs will be changing, as a new club has opened at Styx in Edinburgh on Tuesdays and at the Warehouse in Glasgow on Wednesdays, called Expansions. The main DJ, Mr C is one of the top house DJs In London at the moment as is the other London DJ, Boots. Together they’re playing everything you'd expect to hear at a top London club. They're also letting DJs lrom Glasgow and Edinburgh on the turntables to learn lrom them as they test DJs in Scotland have the ideas but not the material.
The result 01 all this is chaotic. People get up to dance, but the music ls
mixed so cleverly and carelully it tools like you’re dancing to one epic house record, and most clubbers dance until they drop. Once the danceiloor gets busy it literally becomes a sweating mass, but the simple pleasure people are getting irom dancing is apparent trom the lrlendly atmosphere all over the club. Support is building up slowly through word-oi-mouth but with the atmosphere, crazy decor, lighting and sound system, it has the potential to go far.
The Glasgow DJ benefiting lrom Expansions is Kevin, who used to run Krack in Fury Murrys. You can check out his own new club, the Future, on Fridays at the Warehouse as wall. Kevin promises not to play anything all the Grease soundtrack this time. lust solid house — mixing the best at last year's with all the latest sounds, providing a mad, mad night at dancing as usuall (Colin Steven)
