Three Fugitives (15) if: (Francis Veber, US. 1989) Nick Nolte, Martin Short, Sarah Rowland Doroff. 96 mins. The people at Touchstone Pictures know a formula when they see one. Broad comedy done well can touch a box office nerve, witness the series of films they’ve tailored for Bette Midler, witness the mega-success of Three Men and a Baby. Now here we have another (ahem) chucklefest with the word ‘Three‘ in the title, and it follows the fortunes of ex-con Nolte, inept bank-robber Short and cutesy 5 year-old Doroff as they escape on the run together from the law enforcement agencies (James Earl Jones wasted as usual) who're convinced the trio have just pulled a heist. So it's ‘Two Guys and a Poppet' really.
The people at Touchstone can’t quite be bothered writing their own movies so they do French ones in America: Renoir's Boudu Sauve des Eaux becomes Paul Mazurzky‘s Down and Out In Beverly Hills, and Coline

Serreau’s Trois Rommes et un Couffin becomes Leonard Nimoy’s aforementioned Three Men and a Baby. Here they’ve actually let the original French film-maker Francis Veber come overto Hollywood to remake his own movie and get paid in lots of dollars. The results of course play on the sentiments as grossly as one expects. but at least Veber manges some eyecatching slapstick (albeit sub-Tail stuff) and for some fifteen minutes a breathless chase-cum-drag sequence makes the film actually take fire (le I laughed)
Needless to say, the pounds and pennies will roll in. Reasonably entertaining it might be, but this is a particularly cynical act of commerce. (Trevor Johnston)
