The leading architect of early Georgian Scotland, not to be confused with his even more famous son Robert, has his finest work displayed in the form of scale models and original drawings. Between the Jacobite risings of 1715 and ‘45 he designed ambitious buildings for some of Scotland’s leading lights.

A Wild Romance Until Fri 22 Sept. An exhibition of the work ofFrederick Pilkington, 1832—1898, once named as one of the ‘rogue architects of the Victorian era‘. Pilkington designed tenements, private houses built in the central belt of Scotland and churches, including the wonderful Barclay Church which presides over the west side of The Meadows. His energy and imagination were considered outlandish in his day and made him the subject of much ridicule. It was said of Barclay Church that it was ‘the most disorderly building in the city. . . Itlooks like a congregation of elephants, rhinoceroses and hippopotamuses, with their snouts in a manger and their posteriors turned to the golf players on the links‘.

Small City/ Big Country Until Sat 2 Sept. The Fine Art Commission is an advisory body made up of 12 members who examine proposals for new public buildings. The exhibition focuses on 11 proposed and completed buildings, illustrating the issues involved and the process by which conclusions are reached, with an emphasis on context and appropriateness of design.

Madrid Prints, 11 Artists Working In Madrid, Printmakers Workshop.
In Spain, printmaking facilities are limited and in the main organised through the private sector. Nevertheless, work displaying technical competence and divergent styles can be seen at the Printmakers as part of the Spanish theme of the festival. The artists (Jose Manuel Ballester, Carlos Diez Bustos, Alfonso Galvan, Clara Gangutla, Roberto Gonzalez Fernandez, Jesus Ibanez, Cesar Luengo, Eduardo Lopez Argita, Matias Ouetglas, Fernando Rodrigo, Gabriel Villalba) all work in Madrid and take the city as their point of departure for transforming sense-impressions - the texture of concrete, modernist architecture and abstract properties of landscape — Into languages of
headline quoting a 16 year-old girl alluding to her life in Milton Keynes which appealed to the three members as a good maxim for life and an apt title for this display of their photographs.

Munch and Photography and Munch as a Photographer Until Sat 16 Sept. The relationship between Edvard Munch‘s painting and his photography is examined in this exhibition of oils, drawings, watercolours and of course photographs. The EIIIOI ‘l’ower Until Sun 27 Aug. To mark the centenary of its construction, the exhibition looks at the Eiffel Tower through the eyes of 10 contemporary European photograhers.

» . Carlos Dlez Bustos‘ printmaking which vary from the direct, representational style of Eduardo Lopez Arigita to the figure-ground perceptual ambiguities of Gabriel Villalba. Arlgita’s etching of the Chrysler building effectiver captures the aesthetic, totemic quality of the structure. Roberto Gonzalez Fernandez subverts socialist realist imagery to convey a sense of detached masculinity. Alfonso Galvan using biblical imagery, creates a surreal fantasy between man and animal. Lithography by Clara Gangutla confounds reality and illusion in her representations of interiors, both psychological and spatial. Through effective use of colour and a technical skill which avoids cliche, this exhibition portrays a panorama of Madrid. (Lorna J. Waite)

Henri Cartier-Brasson in India Until Fri 15 Sept. Photographs taken from the early 505 to the 805 by the acknowledged master of 20th century documentary photography. The collection includes a moving record, made in 1948, of the last days of Ghandi‘s life.

Helen Chadwick: Lumina Until Sat 2 Sept. In the most interesting photographic exhibition ofthe Festival, Chadwick creates portraits which delve beneath the skin, using polaroids and backlit transparencies. Meat. offal and electric light bulbs form the basic elements in this series of cleverly-executed still-life photographs, which deny any separation between body and consciousness.

Anima Mundl: Still Life In Britain Until Sat2 Sept. The only British date for an exhibition of photography produced over the last five years, organised by the Canadian Museum ofContemporary Photography. The subjects are constructed or deliberate abstractions of natural phenomena and include works by Ron O'Donnell, Mari Mahr, Oladele Bamgboye. Roger Palmer and Sharon Kivland.

The Puss Until Sat 2 Sept. Billed as the first photographic cabaret to be performed on four walls continuously throughout the fringe, Andy Cannon and Duncan McQueen have used a new technique which projects a 35mm negative through a laser printer. The study of human faces changes every few days to create a different atmosphere and set of interactions.
