SPORT
I Sport is listed as diary: by sport. then by day. than by event.
EQUESTRIANISM Fnday18—Sunday20
I Scottish Open Championship Thirlestane Castle. Lauder. Berwickshire. Apparently Mark Todd. Gold medalist in the 3-day event at the Seoul Olympics. is entering four horses. Whether he rides them all at once in a remake ofWilliam Wyler's ‘Ben Hur‘ remains to be seen. thouin the presence of Britain‘s full ()lympic squad should produce a pretty convincing cavalry scene.
FOOTBALL Saturday 19
I Scottish Premier. First and Second Divisions St Johnstone v Clydebank‘s inauguration of the new. all-sealer McDiarmid Park deserves more than B-movie status. Motherwell v Aberdeen could result in ‘Steelyard Blues” for the home team; the Tayside derby might see consistent losers. Dundee. ‘Trading Places‘ with rivals. United; and at Parkhead. Celtic (who know what it islike "To Have and l lave Not') will be looking to begin another chapter in the ‘Jungle Book‘ with a resounding win over Dunfermline.
Tue 22/Wed 23
I Skol Cup Third Round Alas. Alloa Athletic's involvement in the trophy sponsored by the town‘s brewery ended up being no more than a ‘BriefEncounter‘. However. having been promoted to the First Division this season. their ‘Twelve Angry Men' (the team and manager. not the support) should find the challenge of remaining in the Division more than enough to divert attention away from their cup disappointment. Meanwhile. their victors. Hibs. have an ‘Emerald Forest‘of fans desperate to see the club sustain a serious challenge on at least one ofthe domestic honours this season. Of course . a good run in the Skol Cup would boost Hibs‘ confidence just prior to their UEFA Cup First Round games against the Hungarian team. ‘Videoton‘ (no. we‘re not talking about a movie starring Debbie Harry). By the way. ‘The Last Time lSaw Archie' (1961. directed by Jack Webb) seems relevant to the Edinburgh team given the tedious difficulties they have been experiencing with striker, Steve Archibald.

Friday 18
NATIONAL LEAGUE
I Glasgow tigers v Berwick Bandits Shawfield Stadium. Rutherglen Road. Glasgow. 7.30pm. In many respects. this tie will be a needle match. partly because Berwick might vastly improve their title hopes by gaining a victory. and partly because there have been various defections from one team to the other. not least the departure of manager Dick Barrie from Glasgow to Berwick.
I Edinburgh Belmont Monarchs v Exeter Falcons Powderhall Stadium. Beaverhall Road. Edinburgh. 7.15pm. Do you think that l was going to make cheap references to ‘Easy Rider'. the pursuit ofSteve McQueen in the ‘Great Escape'. and ‘Tailspin Tommy‘ (1938. Louis Friedlander)? Hardly.
TENNIS Sunday20-Sunday27
I Scottish National Championships The Whitecraigs LTC. Roddinghead Road. Glasgow. On both Sundays. matches will begin at 2pm; on weekdays they will take place in the evenings. The championships are restricted to individuals eligible to play for Scotland. For last year‘s Men‘s Singles Champion and recent winner ofthe Bank of Scotland Hard Court Championship at Broughty Ferry. Mike McGill. the task of retaining the title will be made a little easier by the absence of Ross Mathieson. No doubt some games will end up being a ‘Love Story‘.
