S.I. Witkiewicz: Photographs 2 Sept—7 Oct. The first exhibition outside his native country is to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of this unusual Pole. whose exploits include playwriting. painting. dabbling in hallucinogenic drugs and demonology as well as his photography. The photographs exhibited here range from his early landscapes ofthe Tatra Mountains to his later staged scenarios taken in the 1920s and 30s. Through Photography 2 Sept—7 Oct. A quintet of artists working in Scotland who all use photography in an experimental manner. The photographers featured here are Oladele Bamgboye. Lorna Bates. Matthew Dalziel. Brian Jenkins and Vaughan Judge.

Reversal of Slogans Until 31 August. An open exhibition organised as part ofthe Festival of Plagiarism Artists are invited to submit work that subverts the images normally associated with advertising slogans. The Festival itself ran from 4—11 August and was designed to show up blind adoration of art and what the organisers see as the purely financial interests of many in the art world.

Two German Artists Until 25 August. Hubertus Hess is known for his 3-dimensional installations which incorporate granite. steel and iron. and he is currently searching the Scottish countryside for suitable material. Christian Rothman the other artist on show has recently been amassing prizes for his murals and designs in Germany. Here he exhibits some of his abstract screen prints and paintings.

Haggs Castle Museum and the Armies of the Covenant are staging a ‘living history‘ event in the castle and grounds. stepping back into 1644 when Scottish Covenanters are mustering troops to march to England. See how children learned their ABC. witness a court-martial. look in on a quack-doctor while he operates. At 3pm the highlight of the event will be askirmish where pikes. swords and guns are used to control fighting in the ranks. Admission free.
