Kjell Torriset will also become the first artist in residence at the 369 in Aug.

THE GREEK
El Greco, National Gallery oi Scotland it there's any one area In which the National Gallery oi Scotland is deilclent then it's Spanish Painting. it's holdings are negligible. But it does possess one masterpiece: El Greco’s ‘Fabula’. Although on loan to the gallery torthe past thirteen years, the work was only actually acquired this spring as part of a deal whereby its value was set all against inheritance tax. Now it lorms part oi a small-scale, well thought out exhibition very much in the manner oi the London National Gallery’s ‘Paintlng in Focus’ series. Whatever its precise meaning - and not even this concentrated comparative analysis tells all - El Greco’s picture is a gorgeously mysterious image.
The subject is undoubtedly some kind o_l allegory oi experience - getting one’s lingers bumt—the monkey is an habitual symbol ior lust. Any more is conjecture. Most of the other pictures are included because oi their nocturnal candlelit eliects - a ditiicuit technical trick to pull oil. A story irom Pliny about an artist named Antiphilus set the precedent and spurred on later artists. Georges de la Tour, whose iacility in this respect was his particular iorte, is seen here in his ‘Boy Lighting a Lamp' as inleriorto the Spanish master. More artists- even Rubens— seem to plump tor a rather nasty pink to describe a tirey glow. Ei Greco’s bleached tonal rendering is tar more naturalistic. The
selection oi pictures which directly relate to ‘Fabula’ is complemented by others in which El Greco’s elongated elegant torms prove him to be an italian-trained Mannerist not a million miles away irom an artist like Pontormo, and even cioserto Tintoretto with whom he may have studied under Titian. The Spanishness oi his worlr is spiritual rather than stylistic. This is a great opportunity to see the marvellous ‘View oi Toledo’ borrowed irom New York’s Metropolitan Museum. it was perhaps not a good idea to include a pastiche oi the work by Scotland’s own John Bellany. Very few contemporary painters can hold a candle to a master llite El Greco. (Andrew Gibbon Williams)
