When We Were Young Until Sat 9 Sept. An intriguing exhibition ofsculpture. painting and drawings taken from public and private collections throughout United Kingdom. that examines the portrayal of children and childhood in British art since the 1880s when the Glasgow Boys and the Nelwyn School first emerged with dewy-eyed youngsters.
Munch and Photography and Munch as a Photographer Until Sat 16 Sept.
The little-known relationship between Edvard Muneh‘s painting and his photography is examined in this unusual exhibition of oils. drawings. watercolours and of course photographs.

It seems strange that an artist who relied so heavily on deep colour, distortion and symbolism should have given photography a second’s thought. This exhibition looks at both his own photography— somewhat hit and miss portraits and artistic, ghost-like experiments with double exposure — as well as examining how the photographs inlluenced his work as a painter.
The inference is that the photographs give the paintings extra meaning. This is true only up to a point. A 1927 black and white photograph of doughty Scandinavian prime minister Otto Biehr hangs next to Munch’s almost life
size, lull-length and starlineg vivid portrait. The painting says tar more about the man than the photograph. Can comparisons oi this kind do anything otherthan iix the paintings in their context? Ultimately, the answer must be yes. A photograph of Munch
space with great success. This year. as part ofthe ‘Holland at the Festival‘ project.8 Dutch artists have set up sculptural works in an innovative collection . using the space to match their individual styles. Ton van Summeren projects a star onto Edinburgh's ‘Acropolis‘ whilst Jorgen Leijenaar following Marcel Duchamp has installed an Amsterdam urinal along a footpath. presumably not as a public conveniance.

Public Arts in Denmark are funded by a scheme which donates 1‘72 of the cost of public buildings towards decorative art and as a result public art is in a healthy state. This exhibition is of illustrationsand sculptures by Anders Tinsbo whose work includes a number ofcommissions for IBM. Danish State Railways and various town halls.

MUNCH AS POTOGRAPHER
and his housekeeper is juxtaposed with the artist's painting at two iigures at a table, entitled ‘Desire' produced in the same year, 1907. While the photograph is stilt and posed the painting is full oi intense meaning. Here perhaps lies the riddle oi Munch. The cold northern light, sombre shadows and facial expressions give a clue to the man’s bleak view oi the world and ambivalent attitudes to women. The monochrome realism of the photographs is then irasmogrilgied by the artist's visionary imagination and superb colour sense. ‘The camera cannot compete with painting as long as it cannot be used in heaven or hell,‘ said Munch. Ultimately, the exhibition is dominated by the paintings and lithographs, powerful and highly-charged reminders oi human tacility, and it is these, not the photographs that provide the main interest. Armando Sat 5 AuguSat 23 Sept. This Dutch artist presents large landscapes heavily influenced by his adolescence in wartime Holland. ()n a lighter note the Gallery will be showing videos of his 1974 cult 'I‘\' show, Gentleman's Sorrow. Incidentally. Armando claims not tobe able to remember his real name.
