ORCHESTRATI
The Kevin McDermott Orchestra, Calton Studios, Edinburgh, Friday 30; Mayfair, Glasgow, Monday 3.
Some kind of success is long overdue for Kevin McDermott. The Glaswegian singer and songwriter formed The Suede Crocodiles alter being jolted by punk rock, when he was ‘just growing up, and I thought ilyou made a good noise, a good racket, then that was good enough for anybody’.
The Crocodiles are history now, and McDermott’s first LP ‘Sutfocation Blues’ sank with little trace in 1984, but ‘Mother Nature’s Kitchen’ (Island), the new LP from The Kevin McDermott Orchestra, will doubtless open a new chapter in his and his band’s careers. The first single from it, ‘This is Where We Were Meant to Be’, and a support slot with 10,000 Maniacs in May, gave a taster of the quality of the songs on ‘Mother Nature’s Kitchen’, and while sales may take a while to pick up, the prediction around here is that in a few years time it will be a record you’ll keep stumbling over in other people’s couecnons.
‘I want to play to a lot of folk who know my songs and will come along purely for the fact that they want to hear me singing and performing. That’s it. If I get bored with that I don’t know what I will ever do with myself. Being on stage is like stepping on to another planet, it's just where I exist more than I exist in real life.’
For someone with such ability, whose music is surely destined to become a fixture in a great many living rooms soon, McDermott is notably unpretentious about his art.
‘My brain collates nonsense and puts it into something that is entertaining and perhaps amusing in a verse-chums format. I’ll draw on anything I have experienced, be it early days, be it

yesterday, and use itto make something new. I’m trying to avoid "writing about”. . . “I have written about. . That sounds to me like a lot of rubbish. I’ve got some tunes, I put some words to some tunes and I like playing them. I’m not about to make some big proclamation, it’s not like that.
’If you said to me now, Write me something, I could probably write something that rhymed and was gramatically pretty good. I have used songs like that. We had a day off in Dublin in the studio, and I was under pressure to actually produce something from that session in a day. So we quickly threw something together, and it turned out really well. It will probably be on the next album. It's called "Suicide on South Street”.’
After a while treading the boards around Europe and the States when the Crocodiles bit the dust (‘lf you do something they like they instantly give you it back’), with nothing more than an acoustic guitar and his vocal cords, McDermott returned home to form a band with his brother Jim on drums, Steph Greer on bass and Marco Rossi on guitar. ’I’ve got the group that will kick any supergroup all over the place. I’m just happy, full stop.’ (Alastair Mabbott)
