FREEDOM EXPRESS & JU JU
Wilkie House, Canongate, Edinburgh. Fridays and Saturdays.
Being a venue of such epic proportions, Wilkie House club events involve some serious stage management. The Spanish Harlem team who have successfully run their club of the same name there for some time, have now set up residence on Fridays and Saturdays bringing us the Freedom Express and Ju Ju respectively.
The Wilkie House setting is ideal for them, being situated in the Cowgate which itself is experiencing a resurgence as hordes of fresh faced boys and girls knock about between trendy haunts such as 80’s, The City Cafe, The Green Tree and the Pelican. So crowds are no problem, with up to the minute sounds on offer.
Friday’s Freedom Express weighs in with a soundtrack from France, Italy and Spain, European House, Acid Jazz and Afro Beats — truly transglobal.
Saturday‘s Ju Ju, which I believe is the name for a West African mystical fetish coined frequently by The Last Poets, features a hot mix of upfront soul, Hip Hop, Garage and 705 Disco/Salsoul. Live bands, theme parties and fashion shows are lined up —already announced is a Midsummer Night’s party with circus acts, catwalks etc.
Balcony slide shows, 16mm film and a video bank enlighten both clubs for which memberships are being issued. All fur coats and no knickers? You choose. (Stuart Raiker)

eager clubbers from all over Scotland and England will be gathering to hear the finest selection of Glasgow's dance DJs performing under the one roof— Segun, Colin Barr, Bob Jetfries, Orde and the Colors boys will all be there. If that wasn’t enough, there’s going to be a bouncy castle (with 2 chutes!), 2000 balloons being let off, confetti cannons, drums, strobes, smoke machines. . . the works!
Co-organiser Frank Devine is tremendously excited about the whole project, ‘Dirtbox N01 is about taking
the warehouse party atmosphere and simply having a night of absolute madness! We don’t want people to stand around and pose, we want to see them up on the dancefloor having a great time, or even up on the tables!’
This could be the beginning of something big as future Dirtboxes are planned it this one is a success, ‘we want to have these parties say every 6 to 8 weeks as there is a massive gap in the market in Scotland for one off all-nighters, there’s only really Thunderball in Edinburgh. The Glasgow nightlife scene is very strong atthe moment. but it’s all concentrated on club nights. We want to do something ditferent— give all the best DJs a stage to perform on and have a massive party at the same time!’ adds Frank, and who’s going to argue with logic like that?!! (Colin Steven)
