NIMAL MAGIC
Gracella Iturbide, Stills Gallery, Edinburgh and Hair of the Dog, Porttolio Gallery, Edinburgh. ‘When a woman was ready to give birth, her relatives would go into the hut and begin drawing animal Iigures on the floor, continuously rubbing them out as soon as they were drawn. The ligure that was being drawn at the moment of birth would become the child's second ego.’ So says one oi the illuminating quotations displayed alongside the Mexican photographs currently on show at Stills Gallery. It is appropriate because intermingled with Gracella lturbide’s fascinating images of the people otJuchitan are all manner of creatures: dogs, hens, crabs, iguana, goats and lizards. Animals are an intrinsic part at the landscape and a vital element in the character of these photographs. Iturblde takes an honest look at the community of Juchitan and reports back on all its human variety. Wandering round the exhibition we pick up a lull sense of Mexican lite; the friendship and the tears, the traditions and the religion, and the moments ‘when happiness turns to sorrow’.
At the Portiolio Gallery animals play an even more central role. Joeharri Lee, a young Glasgow-based
photographer, has put together a small and endearing exhibition of dog portraits. He avoids the inherent danger of producing twee pictures that appeal only to sentiment and captures instead the character and personality at his subjects. Canine alertness, exuberance, energy and rest are all represented against backgrounds that make the dogs seem an integral part of the landscape. A dalmation’s spots appear to cover the field over which it is running and two sleeping dogs lie on top oi a zebra skin to make a collage oi tur. (Mark Fisher).
