SONIC YOUTH
The biggest and best American cult band make a reluctant lunge for respectability on Sunday 12, when they are profiled by ‘The South Bank Show‘, alongside other luminaries of the New York art-rock scene like John Zorn. Unfortunately, their celebrated ‘Teenage Riot’ video doesn't appear, but the reportedly ‘embarrassing‘ ‘Death Valley '69’ video from a few years back does.
I say a reluctant lunge, because Sonic Youth (guitarists Thurston Moore and Lee Renaldo, bassist Kim Gordon and drummer Steve Shelley) have always been set on deflating their reputation as the darlings of the rock intelligentsia - most prominently via the long-running gag of their alter-ego Ciccone Youth, the form in which they can indulge their love of junk pop (particularly Madonna) and daft gestures, culminating in The Whitey Album, which received mixed reviews from theirformerchampions. But they've never been a band to take the obvious option.
Sonic Youth’s distinguishing feature is the way they use their armoury of guitars. Set in tunings which would have many guitarists running to check their insurance policies before they

dared abuse their instruments in such a way, they sound like nothing else around; metallic, rough-edged and often incredibly beautiful, with chords, overtones and harmonics you won’t hear anywhere else. And this is before Thurston has begun beating his strings with a drumstick, or Lee has placed his famous screwdriver behind the ninth
fret. Their recent single with Mudhoney,
the support group on the tour, is split one side apiece, with each band doing a cover of one of the other’s songs. It could be looked at, if you were that way inclined, as a conceptual follow-up to their John Peel session last year, when
they recorded a selection of Fall songs — a compliment Mark E. Smith is not planning to return.
Sonic Youth is the place where punk rock meets progressive rock, flower power and the no wave composer/artist underground. Occasionally, as on the head-scratching ‘Master Dik' single they can get too carried away on their own trip, but moments like that are balanced by LPs like ‘Slster‘ and last year's double set ‘Daydream Nation', where the haunting webs of sound are twisted into neck-snapping rills that match anything currently being produced in rock.
Both in sound and attitude Sonic Youth run contrary to the pack, and they're making compelling music, with its roots firmly in the present. Those who saw their blistering show the last time they came to Scotland (a few days after Iggy Pop had joined them onstage in London for an encore of ‘I Wanna Be Your Dog’) will be turning that they've chosen to take a day off ratherthan play another Scottish show. Strathclyde University on Saturday 18 will be the only chance to see them for a while, so set the video to capture ‘The South Bank Show’ in the meantime. (Mab)
