STARS AT THE QUEENS
Four recent discoveries and two 01 the brightest stars in the jazz tirmament light up Edinburgh's Queens Hall over the next two weeks. The iormer step on
3 stage on the 10th. There is nothing
impromptu about London quartet Roadside Picnic's approach. The music, nearly all written by bassist Mario Castronari, is a carelul grand architecture or sound, reminiscent ol Zawinul/Shorter, but revealing strong classical elements and a rock steady edge to their extemporisations and sudden time shifts. Altogether an absorbingly melodic, and beautitully paced ensemble sound. See Music

The origin 01 Roadside Picnic's style goes back to the advent at a new technology. Jan/Rock, Fusion, Crossover are all labels tor the new music that arrived in the late 60's with the early electronic keyboards. Chick
Corea was at the birth, having played in Miles Davis‘ seminal bands, then as leader 01 Return To Forever, the evolving group which, with Weather Report, was the most successlul oi the 7Ds’. But the demands oi playing in a duo produce some oi Corea's most sustained creativity. His recurrent association with the revolutionary vibraphonist Gary Burton (last at the Queens Hall tor Tommy Smith's Birthday) has over the last two decades continued to produce imaginative and intense music, and not all iurious virtuoso passages. The rellective, quieter interplay ol vibes and piano overtones can be simply prolound. The celebrated pair play at the early time at 7.15pm on the 17th.
Edinburgh does seem to be getting the best 01 the jazz in the run up to Maytest, and here's another good announcement lor the growing audience in the Capital. Bill Kyle, whose Jazzbase is a busy Wednesday night attraction, and Sophie Bancroit, co-ordinator ol Monday's successlul Jazzworks series, have joined lorces to organise a new Sunday afternoon inlormal, tree, jazz club/gig. A trio lormat will circulate the best at the East Coast players, and a guest soloist is invited each week. The venue is the West End's L’Attache basement wine bar from 2—6pm. Food is available all day and the series kicks off on 12 March (see listings), with groups booked through to the beginning 01 May. Once a month the organisers hope to bring up atop name from London tor a special event, but they're quite happy to build up the local audience lirst. (Norman Chalmers)
