FOOTBALL Saturday 28

SCOTTISH CUP THIRD ROUND

I Celtic v Dumbarton Celtic Park, Gallowgate. Glasgow. 3pm. The Cup holders should have learnt their lesson from last year‘s farcical l-0 victory over Stranraer in the Third Round. and must be confident of running up a reasonable score against the team second from bottom of Division Two.

I Clydebank v Montrose Kilbowie Park. Clydebank (2 mins from Singer station). 3pm. A minor upset is possible here. as Montrose have a good record against bigger teams in recent Cup competitions. I Dundee v Dundee Utd Dens Park. Sandeman Street. Dundee. 3pm. United. thrice winners over Dundee already this season. should begin slight favourites. and despite all the platitudes about the Cup being a different ball game altogether. the fact that it is really the same ballgame played to the same rules should ensure an away victory.

I Dunfermline vaerdeen East End Park. Halbeath Road. Dunfermlinc. 3pm. The Dons would have been glad ofan easiertie than this one. and may well require a replay to dispose of the team who are still favourites to return to the Premier League next season.

I Hearts V Ayr Tynecastle Park. Gorgie Road, Edinburgh. 3pm. A year ago. as Ally McLeod‘s team were en route tothe Division Two championship. Hearts would have been more worried about meeting them in the Cup than they will probably be right now. with Ayr floating around in the middle ofthe First Divison. Still. the visitors will probably feel the same way about Hearts. who have a long way to go before they get back to the days when their home record was the best in the country.

I Falkirk V Motherwell Brockville. Falkirk (100 yards from Grahamston station). 3pm. Another close match. which again may go to a replay. The visitors‘ improved form should see them through, however. I Ribs v Brechin City Easter Road Stadium, Albion Road, Edinburgh. 3pm. Could Steve Archibald ever have suspected this time last year when he was still at Barcelona that in January ‘89 he would be up against the mighty Brechin? Probable score: Archibald 2 Evans 3.

I Meadowbank Thistle v Hamilton Meadowbank Stadium, London Road. Edinburgh. 3pm. Arch-rivals in the First Division last season. when the Edinburgh side got the better of their league encounters despite finishing runners-up to the Aceies, the teams' form and fortunes

have changed substantially since then. Hamilton. despite their lowly position in the Premier League. are clear favourites to progress to the Fourth Round.

I Morton V Airdrie C appielow Park. Greenock (5 mins Cartsdyke station). 3pm. Both teams must have hoped for an easier draw: the compensation forthe losers. though. is that they will be able to give their undivided attention to the race for promotion.

I Partick Thistle v St Mirren Firhill. Firhill Road. Glasgow. 3pm. The Saints should be doubly determined to win this one following their embarrassing exit at the same stage last year when they were Cup holders.

I Queen’s Park v Stranraer I tampden Park.

Glasgow (5 mins Mount Florida and Kings Park stations). 3pm. The only team for whom it is possible to win the Cup by playing every match at home begin with a tough match against one of theirchief rivals for promotion from Division Two. I Raifh Rovers v Rangers Stark‘s Park. Pratt Street. Kirkcaldy. 3pm. Aftertheir defeats in the Third and Fourth rounds respectively in the last two years. the odds against Rangers making a similarly early exit must be long indeed. especially given their hosts‘ recent mediocre form.

PREMIER LEAGUE Because ol Scotland's World Cup tie in

Dan Travers

u; . . NATIONAL BADMINTON Sponsored by Girobank to the tune of £4000, the Girobank Scottish National Badminton Championships take place overthe weekend of February 3—5. With men’s and women’s singles and doubles, as well as mixed doubles all being held at Meadowbank, every Scottish badminton player of note is expected to take part.

The best known of all current players, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Dan Travers, teams up for the first time with Alex White oi Kilmarnock to form a formidable partnership. In the men’s singles, holder Anthony Gallagher has perhaps had too many injury problems of late to be capable of retaining his title, but should not find qualification for at least the semi-finals beyond him.

Women's singles holder Gillian Martin is also expected to face a tough task in her attempted title defence, and is unlikely to be regarded as favourite, that position being held by 19-year-old Anne Gibson, now ranked Scotland's number one. Conversely, Edinburgh sisters Jennifer and Elinor Allen are hot favourites to win the doubles.

Although play begins on the Friday, the serious business does not really start until the following day, when admission will cost £1 Ior adults and son for children and OAPs. Prices double the next day, when the finals,

which are to be televised on Scottish Television's Scotsport, begin at 2pm. (Stuart Bathgate)
