Fourteen paintings show the Venetian middle classes at the coffee shop. in the gaming rooms and enthralled with a street-side Punch and Judy show. Compare these naive pictttres with the grand style of Tiepolo elsewhere in the gallery (if you cart find them amongthe new red felt walls). They were contemporaries in Venice. 100 Master Drawings lrom the Permanent Collection Until 23 ()ct. Inaugural exhibition ofthe new gallery (to the rearof the main galleries) devoted to Prints and Drawings: one hundred drawings from the permanent collection. shown in two hatchesof51) (seCond selection now on). A complete understanding of draughtsmanship lay behind the work of the old masters and this is beautifully illustrated here in work by Rembrandt. Claude. Piranesi and many others. Redecorations The rcdecoration programme. begun with one red room last year. is finished just in time for the Festival — plum felt on the walls and plush moss underfoot — like an overgrown smoking room. A controversial move. the new gallery has caused a love/hate sensation. Last week we published just a few of the comments the new galleries have prompted. Here's another from a younger reader Christopher Davidson (aged 9) '1‘“ pass on the pink room. [like the heads(the Albacini busts). They look like they‘re sleeping. I like this rootn too (the Poussin Room) — I like the seats and the lightsand the paintings have extreme action. The thing I like about this place is that you find new words like allegory and baptism. ‘ The red walls did not seem to make much impression to this young visitor!
