Hairspray (PG) (John Waters, US. 1987) Ricki Lake, Divine, Debbie 3 Harry. Sonny Bono. 92 mins. It you are a teenager in Baltimore, beehive capital of the universe, and it’s 1962, then dancing is your surefire ticket to social success— and it you are one at the elite who make the dance Council on The Corny Collins Show, then you I havejusthitteen heaven. Ourheroine, Tracy Turnblad (Ricki Lake), can outdance anybody in the place, even it she is, well, tat, and when she gets a chance to shine in front of Corny at a local record hop, she finds herself not only on the team, but starofthe show. The deposed dance queenette, Amber, and her racist parents (Harry and Bono), don‘t go lorthis upstart

less so when she steals Amber‘s boyfriend as well. Just to cap itall. Tracy then gets lriendly with some, gulp, black people (including the inimitable disc jockey Motormouth Maybelle), and actually wants to bring some of them onto the show. Breathless stutt trom Iormertrash king John Waters, who goes sort of mainstream inthis delightful comedy. It’s every bit as bizarre as it sounds, but with an untlagging pace and sense of fun, and manages to slip in a few telling points about the American way or lite and its icons in the process.

The rich potential for dark laughter is largely throw II away in the soft-hearted later stages of this ratheroverstretched black comedy. I-‘irst-time director I)c Vito'shysterical straining toi'eltect

I The Unbearable Lightness ot Being ( 18) (Philip Kaufman. 138. 1987) Daniel

Day -I.ewis. Juliette Binoche. Lena ()lin. IN mins. Ambitious adaptation of Milan Kundera's elliptical. complex novel about a wornanising (’zech brain surgeon who falls in Iov e for the first time with a doe-like beauty from a small spa town. Abandoning his freewheeling former existence. he faces commitment and togetherness at the time ofthe Prague Spring and Russian invasion of I968.

A dawdling and rather austere narrative is given some spice and interest by an overwhelming eroticism. a beautifully judged evocation of Prague and gorgeous photography. otherwise vastly overlong anduninvolving. (ilasgow:(il71'.

I The Untouchables ( 15) (Brian De Palma, LS. 1987) Kevin (‘ostner. Sean Connery. Robert l)e.\'iro. I 1‘) mins. The best American drama of I‘)S7 as naive Treasury officer Costner. gritty Irish cop(‘onnery (the part that won him. as best supporting actor. his first ()scar). and a groupof incorruptibles tackle the bloated criminal empire of Prohibition kingpin Al Capone. I Vice Versa ( P('r) (Brian (iilbert. US. IUSS) Judge Reinhold. Fred Savage. Swoo/ie Kurtz. 98 mins. A mystical eastern vase enables yuppie businessman Reinhold to change places with his precocious schoolboy sort for the day. with near disastrous consequences for his career and his love life.

Modern variation on a well-worn comic theme that manages little but predictable farce and a resistible exercise in desperate mugging from Mr Reinhold. Perhapsif your mind had been taken over by an elcy en year-old this might be your kind of mm ie. (ilasgow: ()deon. Salon. Iidinburgh: ()deon. Strathclyde: ()deon Ayr. ()deon Hamilton.

I When The Wind Blows ( P(i) (Jimmy'l‘. Murakami. L'K. 1986) With the voicesof .lohn Mills and Peggy Ashcroft. 85 mins. I‘ive-star animation enlivens this otherwise monotonous and talkative version ol the Raymond Briggs book in which an impossibly naive elderly couple lace the chalenge of the nuclear age with the same spirit that brought them through the Blitz.
