When the bass clarinettist of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra inherited a complete and rare library of music from the 19003 to 1940s from his father in 1978, it was too much to just pack it up and store it in an attic somewhere. So Anthony Godwin decided to form an orchestra to play it. Musicians came from such prestigious orchestras as the Bournemouth Symphony, the London Philharmonic, English National Opera. Covent Garden, BBC etc and apart lrom adjusting with ease to the sound and style of these heady days, they showed an unexpected talent tor singing, whistling, tap dancing. loxtrotting and other such delights oi the period. Now known as the Palm Court Theatre Orchestra, with Anthony Godwin as director, they pertorm with potted palms, wing collars, art deco lamps and even original period microphones. Their current show, ‘Puttin' on the Ritz', a ‘sparkling cavalcade of popular music' by Irving Berlin, Hoagy Carmichael, Artie Shaw, George Gerswhin, Noel Coward and more, can be heard atThe Briggait, Glasgow on Sat 16 and The Boss, Edinburgh on Sun 17.
