BEATING TIME
Time is at the root of music. Change the duration or the notes and the melodic
meaning is altered more than by simply
raising or lowering the pitch. And music doesn‘t even need melody. only sounds arranged in proportion. All great musicians have this confident ability to play with time and with their instruments construct a little universe of temporal rhythmic law and order. And now. just when there is a widely increased interest in percussion. in the ‘serious music' ol composers such as Reich. Takemitsu and Xenakis. as well as the jazz and burgeoning World Music scene. Platlorm are bringing back Brazilian born master percussionist. Nana Vasconcelos (see photo). this time leading his own band Bushdance, to Glasgow (11th) and Edinburgh (10th). Last here in two hugely enjoyed concert groupings — with long-term collaborator Don Cherry in Nu. and belore that with Garbarek. the unpredictable Latin firework brings immense subtlety to his playing. along with a cheeky musical wit. The band leatures Nana‘s own compositions and includes keyboards and bass played by Teese Gohe and Sergio Bradao. with second percussionist Cyro Baptista. Yet even with the containerload oi strikeable objects they bring with them. Nana needs to find new sounds, sometimes beating a hollow rhythm out
of his own chest.
A bed or flat metal bars and resonators, struchk with hand held hammers—the Vibraphone. It‘s a tuned percussion instrument and yet another tine exponent is over here to show us a trick or two. Featured in Bill Kyle‘s New York Jazz line-up of last year. Joe Locke is back torten days of Glasgow Jazz Festival gigs. but plays one night in Edinburgh with the rest of the boys in the Jazz Pool on 23rd. (Norman Chalmers).
