All the tickets had sold out weeks in advance forJali Musa Jawara‘s Mayfest concert at the Third Eye Centre, where the partisan audience were treated to a display of modern but traditional-based West African songs and kora playing, that is as varied as it is ancient. He returns with his harp gourd (see photo) to Glasgow‘s Kinooziers Club (23rd) and Edinburgh (29th). The younger urban African players, in common with buskers on the Edinburgh Fringe or London Underground, are using small portable amplifiers and pick-ups to push up the instrument's delicate sound, giving it a driving powerwhich, slung overthe shoulderand wielded by Jali Musa leads Kalifa Camara on balaphone (xylophone) and Absu Dakar Camara on acoustic guitar in an assertive expression of contemporary sound that is being acclaimed all round the world. camera, are the two women singers Mariama Diabate and Maramagabe Keita, who move and dance to contribute regukar startling chorus chants that lift the musicians onward. There is a good bit of improvisation within the song structures, no three minute numbers forthis band, the players are given theirtime, as the audience find theirway into the rolling rhythms and sweet bluesy melodies. One of the most successful British folk groups of the last decade has been the Battlefield Band. They rock the floral clock in Edinburgh's Princes Street Gardens on 18th. Ged Foley played in the best incarnation of the BB and since leaving has built up the House Band, who are now tightened into a three-piece, back from the United States, and, as they say, at a venue near you.
