Joan Eardley 4—29 June. Twenty-five years after her death. Scottish galleries are remembering one of Scotland's most important 20th century painters in commemorative exhibitions. At the Scottish Gallery both oils and pastels sketches show her most famous subjects— thc Catterline landscape of the east coast and the slum children with whom she had such a rapport in paint. During the festival. the Talbot Rice Gallery will be showing a major retrospective of Eardley‘s work.

Sculpture from Scotland Until 3(IJune in the Economist's Plaza. London. Six sculptures by Scottish artists have been sited in the grounds outside the Economist magazine building. ten storeys ofSixties block. This space is often used for sculpture by young Royal College students but it is the first time. thanksto the Scottish Sculpture Trust initiative. that it has hosted Scottish work. Interestingly. the six exhibitors are all women. not by design. but becattse the selectors found their work among the most inventive in the batch of slides on their books. Women were in fact in the minority before selection.

Behold the Man Until end June. Admission 50p (30p). The male nude comes under historic and social survey here as well as tapping into some of its more aesthetic aspects. Examples of the male body in photography go back to the 1840's and bring us up to date with work from the eighties. The exhibition will be shown in two parts (first beginning 7 May. second beginning 4 June.) It has been curated by Edinburgh photographer Alasdair Foster who has also written the text for the accompanying catalogue.
