CAFE ST JAMES
Club 25 at Cale St James: Fridays, Saturdays com-2am. £1 members; £2 non-members. Membership 22. One look at the Playllst— no hardcore or hip-hop here pal -will tell you that Caié St James has its sights set ilrmly on the mainstream. Until three years ago the Top 0’ the .Walk- as it was then known - was a singles club. ironically, due to the success at the club - when the singles got coupled, they had little incentive to return - a change in direction was needed. To implement this the name Club 25 was decided on — a cunning name; the address is 25 St James Centre and the older crowd irom the singles days were never going to be alienated by such a moniker. Last month a thorough redecoratlon took place, and the Cale St James came into being. The new set-up is impressive; one halt oi the room has plush iurnlture and

a laid-back ambience, while the other houses an ample danceiioor with a sophisticated sound system. This iwo-rooms-in-one feel probably explains the very mixed clientele — aged 20—50. The atmosphere is good-natured with dancing being very much the order at the night. Obviously,
the club's site, literally on top at the St James Centre and well away lrom Edinburgh’s new Murder Mile ol Lothian Roadgand the Grassmarket, helps to enhance the relaxed leel.
Definitely worth a try it your taste in music is chart-based and you’re alter an unpretentious, iriendly night out. Plans are in motion to start a soul night on Thursdays which will probably be a big success- we will keep you posted. (Andy Crabb)
