SHEPPARD AN FLOCK
One established International group and two comparitively young ones, bursting with talent, visit Scotland over the next two weeks.
In Glasgow, Blacklriars Bar, a regular music venue, realised it needed a bigger venue tor the visit oi Canada’s Hugh Fraser Duintet (see photo), and promotes them in the Henry Wood Hall on the 28th.
They really have a tight rhythm section, built round Fraser’s piano, and a wealth of ideas in the play between the alto oi Campbell Byga and Phil Dwyer‘s tenor sax, sometimes taken into even richer pastures by the leader’s trombone skills. The individual members have a great deal of musical experience behind them, both academic and in other line ups, sometimes put together in New York or elsewhere by Fraser’s catalytic personality and compositional skills. it’s not hard to see how this lresh, high energy bop-derived live piece are currently regarded as Canada’s top band. Their new album/CD is aptly titled Looking Up.

return visit 01 Andy Sheppard, rapidly emerging as a distinctive British voice on the tenor sax. Just thirty, his playing reveals an unexpected stamina and passion, and a stream of odd intervals and melodic ideas, never content to just run through the chord changes. The group’s enjoyment and enthusiasm communicate easily, and everyone has a ball. With Andy courtesy oi Red Stripe, the young Scots drummer John nae has reassembled his impressive musician’s Collective. See Guestlist.
The intensity, concentrated energy and commitment are obvious. The piano is the medium. Music is spiritual expression. Dollar Brand became Abduiiah lbrahim, and the music 01 his mentors, Ellington and Monk, was swept up in the ilow oi his own South Airican youth, the church hymns, the dance halls, the Township bands and now with his group Ekaya he iinds his home. The music is dense with an underlying melancholy, that is in no way sad. And the band has the finest 01 players with alto saxophonist and ilautist Carlos Ward in a front line 01 baritone sax and trombone, and marvellous one time Mingus tenor player Ricky Ford.
