The great folk music tradition oi giving your services to help a worthy cause brings us two separate concerts, representative ol all that is best in Scottish music.

Glasgow (4th) hosts a memorial to Manuel Lopez, educated and well remembered atAberdeen University, but tragically killed while working as a soil scientist on an agricultural project in Nicaragua. The night leatures some South American musicians but is headlined by the tireless troubador oi the Lelt, Dick Gaughan. Although committed to a radical international socialism, and with a huge repertoire, part sell penned, to prove it, Dick’s Scots/Irish background, love oi traditional singing and relined technique on the guitar make him one at our greatest interpretors ol the ballads and the older Scots songs.

And as it that isn’t enough, one at the country’s top groups, the Whistlebinkies, are also appearing (see photo). Songs in Gaelic, and Mick

performers.

Broderick's Scots song/stories are mixed in a rich, musical Atholl arose oi liddles, llute, harp, concertina and drums with the expert Lowland pipes ol Rab Wallace.

But as the Edinburgh car sticker would have it, ‘Glasgow's Miles Away', so a stroll to the Queens Hall on the 2nd will take you to the Capital’s even bigger benelit. Aline up dense with unaccompanied singers might not be to everyone’s taste, and it so, they can still listen to Aly Bain’s liddle, Martyn Bennet’s pipes or the Scottish new wave visible in Hugh Macharmld’s Haircut. But this appeal on behalf ol the School 01 Scottish Studies at Edinburgh University is dedicated to scholar, poet, songwriter and collector Hamish Henderson who will be lending his enthusiastic voice to the choruses behind a superb line up ol Scottish traditional lemale singers. Flora MacNeil and Margaret Bennet will do the Gaelic honours, and Jane Turrill, Hay Fisher and Belle Stewart the Scots. (Norman Chalmers)
