WHISPERING RASS
Grasscourt Championships, Craiglockhart Sports Centre After last year's rain-soaked disaster the organisers of the Bank Of Scotland Grasscourt Championships have picked up their fledgling event, given it the once-over with a large fluffy towel and a durable hairdryer and knocked together a not unimpressive list of international competitors. Canadian Not Carling Bassett will be joined by Wendy Turnbull and Catarina Lindqvist. The Swede’s coach, John Lloyd, will be appearing in the doubles. In the absence of last year's winner, Gabriela Sapatini, the main attraction will be Hana Mandlikova, the Czech-born Australian ranked 5th in the world. Mandlikova‘s balletic game contains such great fluidity, touch and surprise that it should be a ioy to watch. Ivan Lendl's failure to honour his (written) commitment to the Scottish public has left the men’s draw looking slightly shaky, although last year’s finalists Anders Jarryd and Andres Gomez will be returning. Tournament director Karen Scott is currently pursuing John McEnroe at the French Open in Paris in an effort to secure an

I International Cycling Meadowbank Velodrome. London Road. Edinburgh (adjacent to Sports Centre). Madison racing returns to Scotland after a fifteen year absence. when the British Madison Racing Championship will be contested as part of the East of Scotland International track meeting this weekend. The format originated. like marathon dances. during the Great Depression in the US.when teams raced over six-days non-stop. but the event is now fixed at the gruelling but rather more civilized 80 kilometres. or 320 laps of the Meadowbank circuit. Two-rider teams. one racing. one lapping at low speed alternately. attempt to win by lapping or picking up points in the frequent sprints.

invaluable crowd-puller for the event. Should she fail, the organisers are hoping to lure the ebullient Yannick Noah, a showman of peerless proportions, and the American grasscourt specialist Tim Mayotte.
Meanwhile, Bloomsbury have just published ‘Open Tennis’ by Times' writer Richard Evans. Warmly and accurately written, it offers an intriguing insight into the political manouevring which brought about the abolition of ‘shamateurism', the first open Wimbledon of 1968, and the shaping of the modern game. It also chronicles some of the classic matches and great players of the last twenty years. but at £12.95 you might be better investing in a ticket for the final at Craiglockhart.
