The Normans will be invading again this Saturday. atHaggs Castle in Glasgow. andthe local Gall Gaels will be doingtheirbesttotightthem oil.
The Gall Gael were a people who evolvedthroughthe intermarriage ot the Vikings and the Scottish Celts (and who were attheirpeakraound about the 8th—10th century). On Saturday however. they will not be arriving by long boatbutby car. from Paisley. They are members of the Gall Gael Dark-Age Society and enjoy bringing history to tile. ‘tt's amazing how many people think the Romans were the be all and end all of the Dark Ages‘ says Dennis O'Riordan. a society member. lntact there was much more to this period than woad and Julius Caesar and in Scotland especially itwasa rich and volatiletime.

re-enacting on Saturday7 May at Haggs. Theiropponents. The Croixdu Nord will be Normans coming uplrom England. About30 people will be fighting in allwithtwo othergroups. The Celts of the Dagda Mor and The Northumbriansalsotaking part.
All the groups try to be as historically accurate as possible and I‘m told that one otthe Normans hasalull mail shirt comprising 65,000 chainlinks which took him five months to make. Whether itwill withstand the axes. long bows and swords otthe Gall Gaelsremainsto be seen. torthe outcome otthe battle is iartrom certain. Thoughthey havea scriptand adhereto strictsatetyrules. ‘the resultotthe battle depends entirelyonthefighting skill otthe participants'says Dennis O'Riordan and inthis particularatleast. they will notbe relyingtoo much on historical tact.
