‘Listen to a variety of music. . . fiddlers, saxophonists, pianists. Don’t just listen to guitar players. Guitarists have a bad reputation for being incestuous that way.‘ Advice from Duck Baker (see photo), leading picker in the world of finger style guitar, and whose playing ranges through country blues and ragtime taking in bluegrass and cajun and on into swing jazz. On a flamenco style guitar he even transcribes some of Eric Dolphy’s reedy unpredictability or the eccentric beauty oi Thelonious Monk’s piano structures, and on a steel strung guitar has a large repertoire of traditional Scots lrish tunes, especially featuring the 18th century neo-classical compositions oi lrish harper Turlough D‘Carolan. His droll sense of humour and songs temper the virtuoso’s visits to Glasgow (28th) and Edinburgh (27th).
Another astonishing and American acoustic guitarist, as Glasgow’s Third Eye audience would testify, is Isaac Guillory. This time he plays Edinburgh (16th), courtesy of of the increasingly active Acoustic Routes organisation. Guillory’s experience runs back through jazz fusion to spells with Al Stewart, Elkie Brooks, Donovan and Dunfermline’s own Barbara Dickson, but he is now much in demand for solo work and a new live album has been recorded and ought to be avilable at the concert.
Meanwhile, Glasgow’s St Enoch Folk Club has moved from its bizarre little shared stair with the massage parlour and has reappeared as Blacktriars Folk on Monday nights in the safe haven of

Blackfriars Bar, with a weekly line-up of guests, and the accent on chorus songs.
The Black Bull in Milngavie has been running a successful fortnightly club for years now, drawing its audience from far widerthan the local suburbs. Sunday (17th) sees Ceolbeg, which as you Gaels know refers to the ‘small music' of the Highland bagpipes as distinct from the ‘big music' . . . the piobaireachd. The Edinburgh-based group of this name mix singer Davey Steele with swingy flute, fiddle, plucked strings and the more easily incorporated bellows blown Lowland pipes. (Norman Chalmers)
