BREAKING UP lS EASY TO DO
The end ol anotherterm provides an excuse lor several good gigs at Glasgow's universities and colleges on March 18th. Despite the student and lriend only restrictions, it is well worth trying to be the lriend at a student for the night as seen by the choice of bands on otter.
Best selection is probably at the Queen Margaret Union, where the recently signed Goodbye Mr Mackenzie headline —their second gig in Glasgow this year, tollowing their support slot on the Aztec Camera tour. Also on the bill are Slide, who are young, signed to Phonogram, and massively improved on their early gigs. Buddy Curtess and the Grasshoppers have acquired themselves a reputation as alive band by heavy touring overthe last lew years.
The River Detectives complete the line up at the on. opening proceedings around nine o’clock in their electric lormat, before a rapid jaunt across town to play two acoustic sets at Strathclyde University Union. The rest at the Strathclyde line up is not conlirmed/announced, but promises to be extremely good.
A Dundonian double hill at Danny Wilson and Citizen Kane provide the entertainment at Glasgow School at Art, and the headliners are particularly

recommended in their live iormat. Last year’s show supporting the Christians in Glasgow was viewed by about titty people, but was nevertheless superb, throwing away much of the restraint and production which stifled an otherwise line debut album. Citizen Kane recently played at the Fixx, and come with favourable comments from people who know.
Finally at Glasgow College ol Technology, two very worthy bands, The Men They Couldn't Hang and The Fire Next Time make up another good hill. The Men had a rather good debut single for Magnet (don‘t laugh they could be on RAK) called Island In The Rain, and should have an album out soon.
Fire Next Time are also an interesting proposition, signed to Polydor and having just finished recording their debut album with Hugh Jones. Lead singer and songwriter. James Maddock is a dedicated member of the Socialist Worker Party, and for obvious reasons is not available tor interview before 11 o‘clock in the morning due to his paper selling activities.
Theirtwo singles to date. Beneath the Hammers (Still) and I Can't Go Back (Polydor) perhaps do not fully do them justice — but wait for the album and listen out for Supasave and the Springsteenesque (but totally brilliant) Fields of France, as a reflection at a great songwriting talent.
