It's been the best year yet for jazz in Scotland. Platform has been restructured on a national professional basis, and world class groups are pulling in ever-increasing audiences. the 1st Glasgow International Jazz Festival proved its worth and plans are already well advanced lorthe 1988 event to be held between 24th June and 3d July. Gerry Mulligan will be composer in residence, playing with the Strathclyde Youth Jazz Orchestra, performing with his own big band, and in smaller line ups. the new Festival Director is ex GU student Alan Stanbridge. the last major concerts of ’87 tall to Peshltar- Glasgow (10th) and Edinburgh (11th). virtuoso tabla player who electritied Western audiences in the original lndo-iazz group Shakti, led by John McLaughlin. Hussein has put together a new band for this tour, with fellow Shakti violinist L. Shankar (see photo), who mixes his love of his native music with spells playing alongside rock musicians Peter Gabriel or Phil Collins. to the four Indians is added the exceptional American jazz roclt guitarist Larry Coryell, a name synonymous with 70’s fusion but whose predilection nowadays is to a more open acoustic sound but played with an astounding fluent technique. The concerts will open with a selection of Classical Indian Music.
