Women instrumental musicians are still rare outside at the classical field, but Glasgow boasts one or the best saxophone players around in Sandy Evans. She is to be heard in Sax TC, a relatively new sax quartet, in one of Platiorm's regular tree Sunday lunchtime gigs at the Paisley Arts Centre (13th). Also lind her at the Riverside on Thursday nights in the powerhouse Tam White and the Dexters. Platiorm, the Scottish lobby for all things jazz, has a Glasgow olticerto run the concerts and promote local interest. Olive Millen combines that responsibility with her job at the SRC Glasgow Arts School. That came in handy last week when Louis Brooks' blues band had to change venue at the last minute. A few phone calls and the concert was relocated at the School Of Art where everyone enjoyed themselves immensely.

From a family of musicians - the Millen Bros were a very popular in 1940’s Glasgow- Olive plays alto in Nightshitt, now renamed Uneasy

Pieces (see photo) alter a letter from the lawer representing a similarly named London venetian blind company threatened action. The all women line up or Farida Robertson, drums; Sandra Marshall, guitar; Lyndie McIntyre, bass and Mel Marralis, vocals, with everyone on occasional percussion, play the Third Eye (15th).

Olive describes

their music as ‘City Sass - it’s not jazz, in that there is little improvisation, but we use a lot of percussion and latin rhythms. The songs we write ourselves. Lyndie, who works in wardrobe at the Citizens is the lyric writer, and we put together some instrumental pieces. . . we enjoy an Airican sounding number, all percussion and chanting at the end.’ They have played on the soundtrack of a video, have plans to record some tracks soon, at least as a demo and are set to captivate a special audience early next year when they play in the Special Unit at Barlinnie Prison.
