I LL. Cool J/Eric B. and Raltim/Public Enemy Barrowland. (iallowgate. 552 4601. Yo! From the men who brought you the Be' ‘ie Boys. DefJam. here come LL. Cool] and Public Enemy. Seemslike every would-be football thug will congregate at the Barrowland to pay homage to the man who probably wishes he was Barry White. except he doesn't have the talent. Eric B you will know from the recent hit ‘Paid in Full‘ and ifthat didn’t put you offthen I don‘t know what will. I The icicle Works/The Crows QMU. University Gardens. 339 9784. 9pm. Without being terribly consistent. the lcicle Works have made some great singles that have done nothing chartwisc. and look set to follow that with the most recent release. High Time. The Crows are promoting their current single , ‘Takayama‘ on Survival Records. I Daniella Dax Rooftops. 92 Sauchiehall Street. 332 5883. 10.30pm. Doesn‘t Daniella Dax look like Brix Smith? Anniesland Cross. 8.30—11pm Two tenors.

CULTURAL AMBASSADOR

Since Bob Marley’s death, extravagant claims have been made by some for Dennis Brown that he is the one to fill the space leit by the great man's passing. We're hardly in any position to make such judgements, but you can see for yourselves when he plays at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh on Wednesday 2 Dec, following close on the heels oi another current great reggae singer, Freddie McGregor (whose appearance was also arranged by Sir Dssie and Marley’s Reggae Club).

Lllre McGregor, the 28 year-old Jamaican is a veteran oi Studio One (‘the Motown oi Jamaica', run by the legendary tight-listed producer Clement ‘Coxsone’ Dodds), and is currently engaged in recording new versions oi the hits he made under Dodds’ guidance.

Brown’s sensuous voice like a smoother Gregory lsaacs -toolt “Money in My Pocltet’ into the Top Twenty a good low years ago and, although he’s had a low prolile here since then, there

are few countries he has not taken his music to. lie has visited Ethiopia, his spiritual homeland, several times to live with the Shashamane, and, by singing in their native language, has made his name well-known there.

(Brown’s popularity in Colombia, where all Rastalarians were called ‘Freddie McGregor’ alter the latter’s hlt rendition of the traditional Spanish song ‘Guantanamera', dates from when Brown played there only to be inundated with requests tor the song, which he didn't know. Gamely singing the chorus over and over again, to wild acclaim, seems to have secured his reputation).

ills musical frontiers are further apart now, recent albums displaying experiments with soul and iunlt, attempts both to widen his lans' horizons and attract long-deserved listeners from other styles. lie still does a line line in top-drawer reggae, as anyone with the slightest inclination to give him a try will hear. (Mab).

I Apres Sill Jarvey‘s Inn. Kelso Street. Clydebank. 941 2855. 9pm. Free. More pub rock and why not?

Edinburgh

I Age of Chance Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. 7.30pm. Must say i enjoyed the last gig they played up here. riding the shockwave of their mammoth cover of Prince's ‘Kiss‘. and found their three-minute J.G. Ballard meets white boy hip-hop quite invigorating. Their slogan-Spangled debut LP. ‘Don't Get Mad. Get Even‘. has. however. had a mixed reception. I Blood Uncles Mandela Centre. Potter Row Student Union. Students and guests only. Back from their recent jaunt around the country with PiL. local trio plus drum machine hit the University with some nasty and raunchy sounds. I The Alice llouse and Alto Cirrus Calton Studios, Calton Road. 556 7066. The Alice House are an Edinburgh rock band

moving in a more melodic. jazzy direction.

but where Alto Cirrus are coming from. bar saying the early 70s. is anybody‘s guess. Weird. progressive stuff. but worth going along. if only for the curiosity value. I The Big Wheel and The Illusion Lord Darnley. West Port. 229 4341. 10pm. Free. Big Wheel: hard-gigging commercial rock/pop band. Pomp pop. or bubblegum rock? Still haven‘t decided.

SATURDAY 28 Glasgow

I Age oi Chance Strathclyde University. John Street. 552 1895. The cover version of Kiss was excellent. and perhaps surprisingly. their debut album, One Thousand Years of Trouble showed that they have managed to maintain a lot of vitality, with a distinctly commercial edge to some of the tracks.

I Jamie Barnes and Cochise Viva‘s, Union Street. 2pm. Why bother Christmas shopping when faced with the alternative of going to see Jamie Barnes. Alternatively, Rangers are playing Hearts at lbrox this afternoon . . .

Despite being away for about five years. their ‘comeback' (for lack of a better phrase) has proven them still to be innovative. (See the LP The Idea! (‘0va for evidence.) I Punch and The River Detectives Venue. Calton Road, 557 3073. 7.30pm. Haven‘t seen The River Detectives yet. but our Glasgow correspondent calls them ‘one of the most promising local bands of the moment', praise that could equally apply to Punch, whose first demo showed great ability for writing accomplished jazzy pop songs.
