NDW’S THE TIME
Two master pianists dominate the Now’s The Time iestival oi contemporary and improvised music in Glasgow (27th, 28th). Australian Roger Woodward brings a penetratineg lucid and highly individual intelligence to his performance oi modern music including pieces by Takemitsu and Xenakls. He shares the concert with the American Cecil Taylor whose blinding dexterity is matched by an uniettered imagination at the keyboard (see guestiist).
Glasgow’s Bill Sweeny and Chick Lyall ieature in the Friday event, the ionner lor his composition Sweeny Astray, to be given its premiere by a group which includes the two master ciarinettists Alan Hacker and Tony Coe, again a signal ol the coniiuence ol writing occurring in the classical or ‘serious' music tradition and in the experiments ol the ground breaking jazz players. Chick Lyall will dialogue with his previoust assembled computer piece, improvising on the piano to create anew his composition Threads, lirst perlormed at this years Musica Nova.
The Contemporary Music Network in conjunction with Plationn are also bringing to Glasgow (10th) and Edinburgh (11th) the Indian ian lusion ol Peshkar, a lonnula that was so successiul in the 70's ior John McLaughlin’s Shakti. Virtuoso veterans oi the earlier band Zakir Hussaln and L. Shankar, on tabla and violin, have put together a newline up that explores Indian classical music

Another great guitarist, but in a powerful electric blues band, is Lonnie Brooks, (See photo), Glasgow (3d) and Edinburgh (4th). From Louisiana, he served his early musical apprenticeship in the band ol Ciilton Chenier the King Di Zydeco, but he has evolved a raw, high energy sound honed down over years playing the Chicago clubs. His singing is remarkably souiiui and zestlul lor someone who's being climbing on stage since the 50's.
